How does blood travel?

The heart, the blood vessels and blood are the three main components of the circulatory system of the body that is responsible for blood reaching all parts of the body. The heart, which is the center of the circulatory system, pumps blood which forces blood to gush into the blood vessels.

The blood travels through the blood vessels and reaches all the cells of the body. Because the circulatory system is a closed system, the blood that leaves the heart goes all over the body and reaches back to the heart.

The circulatory system

The circulatory system is an organ system that consists of the heart and blood vessels through which blood flows and travels all over the body. The heat is like the nucleus of the system. The whole organ system works primarily because of the heart.

The circulatory system is a closed system, a loop that begins and ends at the heart. It consists of the following

  • heart
  • blood
  • blood vessels that are of three kinds, namely, arteries, veins and capillaries.


The heart is a muscular organ made of cardiac muscles located between the lungs in the thoracic cavity. The heart purifies blood and pumps it through the blood vessels so it can reach every corner of the body. Pumping action of the heart is a result of contraction and relaxation of the cardiac muscles.

Blood vessels

Blood vessels are muscular tube-like structures that carry blood to the each and every cell of the body. They are like the plumbing system of the body. The blood flows to various parts of the body through the various blood vessels.

Arteries carry fresh oxygenated blood from the heart to the various parts of the body. Veins carry deoxygenated blood from the various parts of the body to the heart. Capillaries are narrower than arteries and veins and help reach every single cell of the body. They also connect the arteries and the veins.


Blood is the life-giving fluid of the body. It is made up of three major types of cells, namely, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. They are suspended in a watery fluid called plasma. It is responsible for transportation of oxygen and nutrients to the body and for carrying the toxic waste products to kidneys and other organs to be thrown out of the body.
