Umbilical Artery – What Is The Role Of An Umbilical Artery?
There are some paired arteries present in our body. These arteries are present as one for each half of the body. One such paired artery is an umbilical artery, which is found in the abdominal region and also in the pelvic region. This umbilical artery is found to extend into the umbilical cord in the fetus. This is how its name was derived.
Role Of Umbilical Artery In The Fetus –
The deoxygenated blood is supplied from the fetus to the placenta (in the umbilical cord) of the mother by the Umbilical arteries. Usually 2 umbilical arteries together with one umbilical vein are present in the umbilical cord. The umbilical arteries supply the blood and nutrients to the hind limbs in the fetus. These are located surrounding the urinary bladder. They carry all the deoxygenated blood out through the umbilical cord of the fetus. Other than the Pulmonary arteries, only the umbilical arteries carry deoxygenated blood in the humans.
Umbilical Artery In Adults –
The anterior (front part) division of the internal iliac artery forms a branch that represents the open (patent) part of the embryonic umbilical artery. This branch is called the umbilical artery. The non-patent part of the artery which is completely ignored is called the medial umbilical ligament. The umbilical artery, located in the pelvis forms the superior vesical arteries. It also forms the artery to the ductus deferens in the males.
