Leukemia White Blood Cells:
Leukemia is a type of cancer that starts in the blood forming tissue. The bone marrow produces abnormal amount of white blood cells. These Leukemia white blood cells do not die at the time they should, making it hard for the normal cells to work.
Based on how quick the disease develops and gets worse, leukemia types can be grouped. Leukemia is either chronic, that usually gets worse slowly or acute that gets worse quickly. Leukemia cells may still have the ability to work like the normal white blood cells. As the number of cells increase in the blood, the Lymph Nodes gets swollen and the condition of Leukemia gets worse gradually.
- Smoking causes leukemia. Chemicals such as Benzene, Formaldehyde are considered as the risk factors for leukemia.
- Exposure to radiation for a long period of time can be the cause of leukemia.
- Radiation treatment is the risk factor of leukemia which is associated with certain chemotherapy drugs.
Symptoms of leukemia include:
- Night sweats
- Frequent infections
- Bleeding gums
- Tiny red spots under the skin and
- Swelling or discomfort in the abdomen
Pain in the bones and weight loss are other symptoms of leukemia.
- The treatments for leukemia include Targeted therapy, Chemotherapy, Radiation therapy, Biological therapy and Stem Cell transplant.
- The treatment for acute leukemia include Consolidation therapy or Maintenance therapy.
- The treatment for chronic leukemia includes Chemotherapy most of the time and this helps in controlling the disease and its symptoms.
- Cancer treatments damage healthy cells, tissues and such side effects are common. However, these side effects differ from person to person.
Facts of White Blood Cells:
White blood cells act as the protective cells which fight against any kind of germs, diseases or infections that enter the body. They produce protective antibodies that fight against the bacteria. The life span of white blood cells is very less. Their lifespan ranges from a few days to few weeks.
A drop of blood contains 7,000 to 25,000 white blood cells. The count of the white blood cells increases when an invading bacteria fights back and persists.
Leukemia is a symptom for high number of white blood cells. A person suffering from leukemia has as many as 50,000 white blood cells in a drop of blood. White blood cells consist of Granulocytes and Non-Granulocytes. Granulocytes consist of Neutrophils, Eosinophils and Basophils and Non-Granulocytes consist of Lymphocytes and Monocytes.
White Blood Cells are considered as the major components of the body’s immune system. Infections, leukemia, lymphoma, bone marrow and and inflammatory diseases are the indication of the low white blood cells count.
