Foods to Avoid while on Coumadin (Blood Thinner)

Many people may not be comfortable with the usage of aspirin a blood thinner used for treating blood clots. Coumadin is a blood thinner used for people suffering from thrombosis. There are certain foods to avoid while on coumadin as this can cause some severe side effects. The other name used for this drug is warfarin and this helps in preventing the formation of blood clots further. Vitamin K may reduce the ability of this drug to prevent blood clots. Read on to know more about the foods that should be avoided.

Coumadin and Vitamin K

This oral drug prevents the clot from bursting and prevents the future development of them as well. The positive effects of this drug can become feeble if a person includes vitamin K in his/her diet. Vitamin k restricts the effects of the anti-coagulants in the body and this should be completely avoided.

Foods to be Avoided

Coumadin and vitamin K do not go together as this vitamin consists of certain chemicals that minimize the efficiency of this drug when they interact with each other. This can further result in the development of more clots and in some cases a person may also experience burst blood clots. The following foods should be avoided while you are on coumadin.

  • Avoid consumption of dairy product like yogurt.
  • Avoid including green onions and peas in your diet.
  • Avoid consuming beverages like coffee and herbal teas like green tea.
  • Avoid vegetable oils which include canola, cottonseed, olive and soyabean.
  • Avoid herbs such as endive and parsley.

Vegetables to be avoided

  • Collard Greens
  • Cauliflower
  • Mustard greens
  • Kale
  • Turnip greens
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Alfalfa
  • Spinach and
  • Asparagus

You can include citrus fruits like oranges, milk, salmon fish and breakfast cereals in moderate amounts.

Diet Restrictions

There are a few beverages that help in amplifying the effectiveness of coumadin to a great extent which can again lead to internal bleeding. Therefore, avoid consumption of cranberry juice and alcoholic drinks. A person taking blood thinners should avoid the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Avoid the following dietary supplements as well as they increase the drug’s anti-coagulant effect.

  • Laxatives like mineral oils
  • Antibiotics
  • Medicines containing aspirin
  • Vitamin E supplements and
  • Herbal supplements like gingko, ginger and bilberry
